Alcalá del Júcar is a picturesque village in the province of Albacete, in Castilla-La Mancha, Spain. Known for its striking landscape of whitewashed houses built into the side of a cliff above the river Júcar, it is a destination that offers a unique blend of history, culture and nature.
One of its highlights is the Moorish castle, standing majestically at the top of the cliff with panoramic views over the valley and the river. The village also has a network of cave dwellings carved into the rock, some of them open to visitors, showing what life used to be like in this region.
Beyond its heritage, Alcalá del Júcar is ideal for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts: the river offers kayaking, rafting and fishing, and the surrounding hills are perfect for hiking.

Hoz del Júcar nature park
One of the most surprising landscapes in Castilla-La Mancha, carved over centuries by the river Júcar before it meets the Cabriel. Here the river flows from orchards and riverside woodland into a spectacular succession of meanders winding through deep canyons whose walls sometimes exceed 100 metres.
The slopes are covered with dense pine, holm oak and juniper forest, and the rock faces are perfect nesting sites for raptors such as the golden eagle and the griffon vulture. Its viewpoints offer beautiful scenery, and the terrain lends itself to sports such as canyoning.
Tranco del Lobo
Part of the municipality of Casas de Ves, between its territory and those of Villa de Ves and Alcalá del Júcar. In the early twentieth century a hydroelectric plant and workers’ houses were built here, giving rise to the Tranco del Lobo settlement, complete with its own church, now in ruins.
It is an area rich in flora and fauna, ideal for hiking, fishing, a swim in the Júcar or simply enjoying the views. There are also easy to moderate cycling routes.
Molinar reservoir
Very close to the previous spot, this is rugged but accessible terrain where forests and the canyons of a river returning to its wild state below the dam come together. It is the largest reservoir in La Manchuela and, through an impressive gorge, leads from the village of El Molinar to the remains of the first power station built in Spain by Hidroeléctrica Española.
